The threat of malaria is growing in Ukraine: a biologist explained the dangers of tropical mosquitoes
Scientists warn that global warming may contribute to the spread of malaria mosquitoes in Ukraine, even after measures to eliminate malaria have already been implemented. Winters are becoming increasingly warmer, creating favorable conditions for tropical mosquitoes that can transmit dangerous parasites and viruses. We present the conclusions of PhD in Biological Sciences Viktor Brihadyrenko, which emphasize the importance of monitoring and malaria prevention efforts.
Now, winter is becoming increasingly warmer, which contributes to the spread of tropical mosquitoes that can survive at temperatures above minus 5-10 degrees. Malaria mosquitoes can bite humans multiple times throughout their lives and transmit parasites and viruses," the scientist said.
Malaria remains one of the most dangerous infections in the world. We have eliminated local outbreaks, but there is a constant threat of this disease returning from the tropics," the expert warned.
The situation requires systematic monitoring and active malaria prevention measures. Unfortunately, the lack of a system and unstable funding complicate control over this issue. To prevent malaria, it is necessary to respond promptly to the increase in the number of malaria mosquitoes and carry out the necessary disinfection activities.
Due to global warming, the risk of malaria spread in Ukraine is increasing because of favorable conditions for tropical mosquitoes. Even after the elimination of malaria hotspots, there remains a threat of this disease's return. Immediate action is required to control and prevent the spread of malaria in Ukraine.
