Former Ukrainian President Yanukovych Sentenced to 15 Years for Land Grab
High Anti-Corruption Court Delivers Verdict
According to Главком: On January 20, 2026, the High Anti-Corruption Court of Ukraine (HACC) found former President Viktor Yanukovych guilty of illegally seizing a plot of land in the Kyiv region. The court sentenced him to 15 years in prison with confiscation of property and barred him from holding public office for three years. This case is part of Ukraine's ongoing judicial efforts to address crimes from the pre-Maidan era.
Case Details
According to the court, Yanukovych initiated decisions in 2007 that led to the illegal acquisition of a 17.5-hectare plot in the Sukholutska village council area. The land, valued at over 22 million hryvnias, was later developed into a hotel and restaurant complex between 2009 and 2011.
The investigation into Yanukovych began in 2014. Initially handled by the Special Investigations Department of the Prosecutor General's Office, the case was transferred to the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO) and the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) in November 2019. The court also found an accomplice guilty but released him from punishment.
The verdict will become final 30 days after its announcement. This is Yanukovych's second conviction; he was previously found guilty of inciting desertion and organizing illegal border crossing.
This ruling marks a significant step in Ukraine's anti-corruption fight, targeting a former president long under investigation for various crimes. It demonstrates the resolve of Ukrainian law enforcement to hold high-ranking officials accountable for abusing their power. However, the practical enforcement of this sentence and potential appeals remain uncertain, which could impact the trajectory of the country's broader anti-corruption reforms.
