Ukraine's Anti-Corruption Court Upholds Seizure of Ex-Tax Official's Family Cars Over Unjustifiable Wealth
Appeal Court Ruling
According to САП: On April 10, 2026, the Appeals Chamber of Ukraine's High Anti-Corruption Court (HACC) upheld a ruling that the assets of a former head of the State Tax Service's Main Office in the Odesa region and his family were unjustified. The court found it impossible that two luxury vehicles could have been purchased with legitimate income, thereby affirming the first-instance court's decision from November 21, 2025. This case is part of a broader judicial effort to hold officials accountable for unexplained wealth.
An analysis of the family's income and expenditures confirmed the assets could not have been acquired through legal means. The court agreed with the prosecutor's arguments and dismissed the defendants' appeal. The Appeals Chamber's decision is effective immediately.
Evidence and Assets
The lawsuit was based on materials from the State Bureau of Investigations (DBR), the National Agency on Corruption Prevention (NACP), and evidence independently obtained by a prosecutor from the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO). The vehicles under scrutiny included:
- A 2018 Toyota Land Cruiser 200, purchased for 300,000 hryvnias;
- A 2020 Audi RSQ8, acquired for 1.4 million hryvnias.
The combined market value of these cars exceeds 5.3 million hryvnias. According to provided information, the family later sold the Audi at market price and bought a BMW X7 xDrive.
This ruling represents a significant step in Ukraine's anti-corruption fight, demonstrating the judiciary's commitment to adjudicating cases involving illicit assets of public officials. Such verdicts are expected to set a precedent for other investigations by anti-corruption bodies and promote greater financial transparency among public figures.
This ruling aligns with recent efforts by the judiciary to tackle corruption, as seen in another notable case where significant funds were confiscated. For instance, the Ukrainian Anti-Corruption Court seized over 5 million hryvnias from a former local deputy, highlighting the ongoing commitment to addressing unjustified wealth among public officials. Such actions are crucial in fostering accountability and transparency in governance.
