Fructose vs. Glucose: A Study on Their Distinct Effects on Hunger

According to НВ — Техно: Researchers at the Monell Chemical Senses Center have uncovered that the brain can tell fructose and glucose apart, triggering separate biological responses to each. In experiments conducted on mice, glucose proved far more effective at quieting AgRP neurons-the brain cells that drive hunger-compared to fructose. The findings were released on July 11 at 5:00 PM.

Fructose, the team discovered, boosts levels of the hormone PYY, which then sends a signal to the brain via the vagus nerve. However, this sugar only modestly suppresses AgRP neuron activity. Glucose, by contrast, operates through a different biological pathway and delivers a much stronger effect on these same neurons.

What the Results Mean for Eating Behavior

Interestingly, mice ate roughly the same amount of food right after consuming either glucose or fructose. Yet high-fructose corn syrup-a blend of both sugars-had a more powerful impact on hunger-related neurons than pure fructose did. As a result, the mice showed a clear preference for the corn syrup over fructose alone.

These findings open new doors for understanding the mechanisms that regulate appetite and food intake, which could prove valuable for developing weight control and dietary strategies.

Although the study was done in mice, the implications for human appetite and eating habits are significant.
