UK Announces Its Largest Sanctions Package Yet, Targeting Russia's Transneft and Rosatom
UK Sanctions Against Russia
According to Главком: The United Kingdom has imposed its most extensive sanctions package against Russia since the full-scale invasion began, targeting nearly 300 individuals, companies, and assets. The primary focus of these new restrictions is the state-owned pipeline giant Transneft, which handles over 80% of Russia's oil exports. The sanctions also extend to subsidiaries of the nuclear energy corporation Rosatom, nine banks, three nuclear energy companies, and six facilities involved in liquefied natural gas (LNG). This move directly targets the financial and energy pillars of the Russian state.
Key Details of the New Sanctions Package
The new package specifically includes 49 people and organizations involved in supplying components for drones. Georgian television channels Imedi TV and PosTV have also been sanctioned. In total, since the start of the conflict, the UK has now sanctioned over 3,000 individuals, companies, and vessels. This action comes as the European Union has been unable to finalize its own 20th sanctions package in time for the fourth anniversary of the invasion, with Slovakia blocking the new EU measures. As UK Home Secretary Yvette Cooper stated:
'Four years have passed since Russia began what Putin thought would be a three-day operation. As the Kremlin continues its barbaric assault on innocent civilians, who have endured the most brutal winter in a decade, the courage and resolve of the Ukrainian people remain unbroken.'
The UK's imposition of this new sanctions package underscores its firm support for Ukraine and its intent to maintain pressure on Russia, especially amid delays in new EU sanctions. Given that the UK has already sanctioned a vast number of entities, continuing this policy aims to further constrain Russia's economic and military capabilities. Beyond economic pressure, such actions also carry significant symbolic weight in supporting Ukraine's fight for sovereignty, demonstrating solidarity even as other allies face internal disagreements.
