Spring frosts destroyed 90% of peach harvest in Odessa region
Severe spring frosts recorded in Ukraine have led to catastrophic consequences for fruit cultivation. According to Dmitry Ostapenko, director of Green Technology Ltd, losses from night frosts amount to 90% of the peach harvest.
«Our orchard was in excellent condition. Early April is when everything blooms best, but the sharp drop in temperature was devastating. We lost about 120 tons of produce,» said Ostapenko.
Temperatures dropped to -6.6° on the coldest night, which resulted in the death of peach blossoms at their full blooming stage. As a result, the company's losses exceeded 7.2 million UAH just from the products, excluding taxes and other expenses.
Rising prices of seasonal fruits due to crop losses
Due to the April frosts of 2025, Ukraine suffered losses of apricot, peach, and blueberry harvests, which will lead to significant price increases for fruits. Prices for apricots are expected to soar by 25%, while the situation with apples remains uncertain due to flower damage.
«Financially, this is a disaster for both us and the state. We have no access to official statistics in the country, but it is clear that the scale of losses is huge,» emphasized Ostapenko.
According to Tatyana Adamenko, head of the agrometeorology department of the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center, the sharp drop in temperature this year has become a serious problem, especially for agricultural crops.
April frosts in Ukraine have affected fruit cultivation, causing significant losses for gardeners. Moreover, crop losses will lead to rising prices for apricots and other fruits, which could impact the budgets of Ukrainians.
