Cherkasy Veterans Demand Police Chief's Resignation Following Deadly Shooting
Veterans Stage Protest in Cherkasy
According to ХВИЛЯ: Veterans from across the Cherkasy region arrived in a motorcade to protest outside the regional military administration. They are demanding the resignation of the head of the regional police department, Oleh Hudyma, and a thorough investigation into a shooting in the village of Nekhvoroshch. The incident on January 27 resulted in the deaths of four police officers and veteran Serhii Rusinov. This protest highlights ongoing tensions regarding the treatment and security of veterans in post-conflict Ukraine.
The tragedy has sparked outrage among the veteran community. According to the National Police, officers arrived at Rusinov's home to conduct investigative actions related to an arson case. However, reports indicate Rusinov ambushed the officers, opening fire and killing four before being killed himself. Veteran Yaroslav Nyshchyk pointed to a long-standing land dispute between Rusinov and a local council member, Vitalii Storozhuk, as a potential factor.
Protesters' Demands
Protest organizers are also demanding the return of the deceased veteran's body to his family for burial. Co-organizer Serhii Koval stressed the need for accountability and greater attention to veterans' issues. He stated:
“Our primary demands are to draw attention to veterans, second is accountability for those responsible, and third is the removal of the regional police chief. The person in charge oversaw this, and the regional head knew what was happening.”
The protest in Cherkasy underscores deep-seated social and legal issues requiring resolution, particularly concerning the safety and rights of veterans. This tragedy has catalyzed a public discussion about the role and accountability of law enforcement in such volatile situations. The transparency and significance of the investigation will likely impact public trust in Ukraine's security institutions.
