Ukraine's Accession to the European Union - Germany's Ministry of Foreign Affairs Assesses the Chances

The European Union is making efforts to help Ukraine become part of it.

Europe sees a future together with Ukrainians, said German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock in an interview with the Romanian channel 'Digi 24'.

She called the granting of candidate status to Ukraine a historic moment. However, according to the minister, at the moment Ukraine's accession to the European Union and NATO is impossible 'for obvious reasons'.

'The path there will still be long and, of course, sometimes difficult. We are doing everything possible to support Ukraine in the process of harmonizing its legal system and standards with those of the EU. In this way, we are paving the way for accession,' said Baerbock.

According to her, the EU must also do 'its homework'. That is, think about the mechanism for making decisions in an expanded union.

'That's why we support reforms. For example, implementing a system of qualified majority voting in a number of issues,' said Baerbock.

There can be no normal relations with the aggressor country, the Russian Federation. The West will continue to tighten sanctions against the Russian Federation as long as the Russian aggression against Ukraine and the violation of international law by Russia continues. This was stated by German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock.

After the full-scale war, Ukraine will need NATO security guarantees. The country must be strengthened so that the Russian Federation does not dare to invade again, said the head of the Bundestag's Defense Committee Marie-Agnes Straub-Zimmermann.
