Small Gas Stations in Ukraine Face Extinction: WOG CEO Predicts Only a Dozen Networks Will Survive
Ukraine's Gas Station Landscape Is Shrinking
According to Главком: Andriy Pyvovarskyi, CEO of the WOG chain, has warned that the number of gas stations in Ukraine will continue to decline due to the ongoing energy crisis and global oil market instability. In an interview with Liga.net, he explained that this trend has been unfolding for several years and shows no signs of stopping. The primary driver is market consolidation, which will gradually push smaller networks out of business.
Pyvovarskyi pointed out that the state-owned company Ukrnafta remains the only major domestic oil refiner in Ukraine, leaving other players heavily reliant on imports. As he stated,
“The market is moving toward consolidation-smaller networks will gradually disappear.”
Fuel Market Dynamics
As a result, the market is expected to coalesce around roughly ten large operators, intensifying competition among them. This shift reflects broader economic and structural changes in Ukraine’s fuel sector.
In a separate address to the Verkhovna Rada, Pavlo Kyrylenko, head of the Antimonopoly Committee, assured lawmakers that the fuel crisis is stabilizing and that there is no shortage of gasoline or diesel in the country. His remarks paint a picture of a market in transition, where mini-networks tied to individual entrepreneurs are gradually disappearing.
The reduction in gas stations mirrors deeper transformations in Ukraine’s economy and fuel market structure. While consolidation may boost efficiency and improve service quality, it also reduces opportunities for small players. At the same time, the Antimonopoly Committee’s assurance of stabilized fuel supplies suggests that, despite challenges, the market remains manageable-a message likely to reassure consumers.
The ongoing changes in Ukraine's fuel market are further complicated by rising gas prices, which have doubled recently due to increased competition from Asia and market speculation. This situation not only affects the larger operators but also poses significant challenges for smaller gas stations struggling to survive.
