Christmas Traditions of Ukraine: Why Doors Were Open Wider and Kutia Was Left Overnight
According to Visit Ukraine: Christmas has always been considered a family holiday. An important moment was the gathering of all loved ones at this special time, even those who were far from home. It was believed that loneliness on Christmas could bring misfortune, so all doors were opened wider, and there was a place at the table for everyone.
The Holy Evening began on the eve of Christmas with silence, the aroma of kutia, and a lit candle on the table. Twelve lean dishes emphasized gratitude and brought the family together. Kutia was left overnight, believing that those who had passed away would return home that night.
The Living Tradition of Christmas
During the Christmas holidays, carolers would go out into the streets. Each brought their own destiny: someone carried a star, someone rang bells, and some felt the urge to open a window, even on a frosty night. This was not just a simple tradition – it was a way to remind each other that we are together, that we remember, and that we hold on to the light.
