Switzerland has extended protection for Ukrainians until 2027: who will see changes in the rules
Ukrainians can continue to receive S protection status in Switzerland until March 4, 2027, but from November 1, 2025, new restrictions will be introduced for those applying from seven regions of our country. This decision was made due to Russian attacks and security threats existing in certain areas of Ukraine.
New restrictions stipulate that starting October 8, 2025, applicants from Volyn, Rivne, Lviv, Ternopil, Zakarpattia, Ivano-Frankivsk, and Chernivtsi regions may be denied S protection status in Switzerland. However, there is a possibility to apply for asylum for those who have been denied protection status.
Under certain conditions, temporary residence in Switzerland is possible for individuals who have been denied protection status if their deportation is impossible. However, the reinstatement of regions on the list is possible if the situation changes.
It is important to note that the new restrictions will not affect those Ukrainians who already have S protection status in Switzerland as of November 1, 2025. These restrictions will only apply to new applications submitted after October 31 and reviewed after November 1, 2025, with the possibility of updating the list of regions in the future.
Summary
Switzerland has extended protection for Ukrainians but has introduced new restrictions for applicants from seven regions of Ukraine due to Russian threats and security issues. These changes reflect the overall trend of European countries revising and improving migration policies regarding Ukrainian refugees.
