Zaluzhnyi Tells Zelenskyy He’s Ready to Run for President
Valeriy Zaluzhnyi’s Readiness to Enter the Race
According to ХВИЛЯ: During a Kyiv meeting focused on improving battlefield conditions, former Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief and current ambassador to the UK, Valeriy Zaluzhnyi, confirmed to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that he would stand in the presidential election if it takes place this autumn. Zaluzhnyi had been summoned to the capital early last week, officially to discuss UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s upcoming resignation.
Zelenskyy noted that the front-line situation is developing positively and that society remains united. The president then asked directly: “If elections happen in autumn, will you run?” Zaluzhnyi replied:
“Yes. I will.”
Following this answer, Zelenskyy did not offer him any further career options, even though the president’s office had been prepared to discuss a range of government roles, including the position of prime minister.
Talks Over a Political Future
Zaluzhnyi explained that he never sought a political career but could not ignore the trust placed in him by the people. For additional discussions, National Security and Defense Council Secretary Rustem Umerov and Servant of the People faction leader David Arakhamia were dispatched. They reiterated arguments about potential societal division and risks to the state, but Zaluzhnyi’s stance remained unchanged after their conversation. As they parted, Umerov and Arakhamia asked him:
“Brother, but think it over once more.”
In essence, Zaluzhnyi’s readiness to run for president underscores his promise to honor public confidence, despite state offers of other positions.
This situation highlights the weight of political decisions amid the challenges Ukraine currently faces. Zaluzhnyi, who gained widespread popularity for his role in the country’s defense, could become a major force in the political arena, especially during wartime. His decision to run may reshape Ukraine’s political landscape and affect stability ahead of the elections.
