An Interview with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy

According to Главком: In an interview with France24, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed critical issues as the country approaches the fourth anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion. The conversation comes at a pivotal moment, with international attention focused on the war's trajectory and future security arrangements.

Zelenskyy covered several key topics, including:

  • The current advances of the Ukrainian Armed Forces (UAF);
  • The diplomatic pressure Kyiv faces from both the United States and Russia concerning a potential settlement to the conflict;
  • Operational challenges, such as wartime communications disruptions.

The President also expressed his hope for the potential deployment of a European military contingent following any future ceasefire.

War Assessment and International Pressure

When asked to assess the state of the war, Zelenskyy stated:

“It cannot be said that we are losing the war. Honestly, we are definitely not losing it. The question is whether we will win.” - Volodymyr Zelenskyy

He highlighted Ukrainian successes on the southern front, where forces have liberated 300 square kilometers of territory. However, he pointed to significant problems caused by satellite communication failures, which complicate military operations for Ukrainian troops.

Regarding international pressure, Zelenskyy identified two key players-the United States and Russia. He noted that both sides suggest Ukraine should cede the Donbas region if it wants the war to end quickly. This remains a complex and contentious point in any discussions about resolving the conflict.

The President also voiced concern about holding elections during wartime, stating that 'nobody wants elections during a war. Everyone is afraid of its destructive effect.' This underscores the profound challenges the nation faces while the conflict is ongoing.

Looking ahead, Zelenskyy expressed hope for the stationing of a European military contingent after a potential ceasefire. He emphasized that Ukrainians would want their partners to stand with them on the front lines:

“We would like to see a contingent closer to the front line. Of course, nobody wants to stand on the first line, but Ukrainians would like partners to stand with us on the frontline.” - Volodymyr Zelenskyy

This interview serves as a crucial reminder of the intricate situation in Ukraine and the continued necessity for international support in countering aggression. Despite battlefield gains, the country contends with immense political and military strain, requiring careful management and strategic decisions. As the conflict intensifies and diplomatic talks continue, support from Western allies remains vital for Ukraine's fight to preserve its sovereignty.
