Ukrainian Drone Pilots Honored for Downing Advanced Russian Ka-52 Helicopter
Military Personnel Receive Honors
According to Главком: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has awarded the Order 'For Courage' II degree to four servicemen from the 59th Unmanned Systems Brigade. They were recognized for successfully destroying a Russian Ka-52 helicopter using an FPV drone on the Pokrovsk front. This commendation highlights their unit's consistent performance, as this marks the second time they have achieved such a feat.
According to Presidential Decree No. 252/2026, the recipients are:
- Yuriy Mykhailovych Andrusenko
- David Vitaliyovych Nechipas
- Serhiy Anatoliyovych Sliepko (Junior Sergeant)
- Vadym Serhiyovych Shapoval (Junior Sergeant)
Their target was a heavily armed Russian attack helicopter, equipped with modern weaponry including a 30mm cannon, unguided rockets, guided anti-tank missiles, and air-to-air missiles.
Ongoing Combat Operations
The helicopter's crew was eliminated by pilots from the first battalion of the 414th 'Birds of Magyar' Brigade. As serviceman Pavlo Palisa noted:
“A machine worth millions was destroyed by a precise FPV drone strike. It's crucial to understand: this isn't a fluke. This is systematic work. This is already the second such result for this unit.”
The Ka-52 is a formidable platform, protected by the 'Argument-52' complex, the 'Vitebsk' defense system, an armored cockpit, and ejection seats, underscoring the difficulty of the task accomplished by the Ukrainian soldiers. In a separate incident on March 17, an A-50 long-range radar detection aircraft was damaged in an attack on the 123rd Aviation Repair Plant in the city of Staraya Russa, Novgorod Region, Russia. These events illustrate the intensity of current combat and the expanding scope of Ukrainian defensive efforts against Russian aggression. The use of relatively inexpensive drones to destroy high-value assets has become a defining feature of this conflict.
The awards ceremony underscores the critical role of unmanned technology in modern warfare and the growing proficiency of Ukrainian forces. Destroying a heavily protected Russian helicopter demonstrates significant progress in the training and tactical application of new combat systems. Such successes are likely to influence the tactical calculations of both sides in the conflict and bolster the morale of Ukrainian troops.
