President of Ukraine Confirms Attack on Spent Nuclear Fuel Storage

According to Главком: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has confirmed that a Russian drone struck a technical building at the Centralized Spent Nuclear Fuel Storage Facility (CSNFSF), located within the Chernobyl nuclear power plant exclusion zone. The attack was carried out by a Shahed kamikaze drone. Zelensky described the strike as a deliberate act of malice and nuclear blackmail by the Kremlin.

“Today, the Russians once again targeted the restricted area around the Chernobyl nuclear plant. A Shahed drone hit one of the buildings at the Centralized Spent Nuclear Fuel Storage Facility-an extremely critical piece of infrastructure. This was an exceptionally vile Russian attack. Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry, Energy Ministry, and all relevant agencies are already working to ensure every partner knows exactly what happened,” President Volodymyr Zelensky stated.

As of the time of his statement, no abnormal radiation levels had been detected. Ukrainian emergency crews had extinguished the fire caused by the strike. Zelensky also emphasized that the Russians deliberately targeted this nuclear infrastructure site, even though the radiation situation currently remains within normal limits.

“There is no doubt that this even surpasses Russia’s already sky-high level of insolence. The world must take real, new steps to make Russia feel that its terrorist war is a strike against Russia itself,” the president added.

Escalation of the Conflict and Strikes on Civilian Infrastructure

Over the past seven days, Russia has launched:

  • 88 missiles
  • over 3,250 attack drones
  • approximately 1,800 guided aerial bombs

“Last night, Russian strikes also hit other civilian targets across 13 of our regions. In total over the past week, Russia has fired 88 missiles, more than 3,250 attack drones, and around 1,800 guided bombs against Ukraine. Pressure on Russia must be increased,” Volodymyr Zelensky stressed.

This incident highlights not only the threat to nuclear safety but also the escalating conflict between Ukraine and Russia. The attack on the spent nuclear fuel storage facility comes amid relentless strikes on civilian infrastructure, reflecting the Kremlin’s strategic approach to warfare. In wartime, it is crucial that the international community responds appropriately to such actions to prevent further threats to the region and the world at large.

As tensions escalate in the region, the situation is further complicated by Ukrainian counteractions against Russian military assets. Recent reports indicate that Ukrainian drones have targeted Russian naval depots near St. Petersburg, highlighting the ongoing conflict and the reciprocal nature of these attacks. This dynamic raises significant concerns about the broader implications for security in Eastern Europe.
