Leadership Shake-Up at Ukraine's Security Service
According to Главком: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has enacted a leadership reshuffle within the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), appointing new heads for its counterintelligence departments. By decrees No. 269/2026 and No. 270/2026, Serhiy Hunkovskyi, previously the deputy head of the department, has been named Chief of the Counterintelligence Department. Viktor Zaiets has been appointed Chief of the SBU's Military Counterintelligence Department.
Significance of the Appointments
These appointments come as the SBU prepares to mark its professional holiday, Ukraine's Security Service Day, on March 25. The SBU has played a critical role in national defense since Russia's full-scale invasion began. Since February 24, 2022, SBU operatives on the front lines have reportedly destroyed:
- over two thousand tanks,
- more than four and a half thousand artillery systems,
- over 700 air defense assets.
In the past year alone, the Security Service has conducted dozens of unique special operations, demonstrating its active and evolving role in safeguarding the nation. These leadership changes, particularly in the key counterintelligence branches, underscore the SBU's ongoing adaptation to modern threats and the demands of a protracted war. In the context of continued military aggression against Ukraine, the effectiveness of the SBU remains crucial for national security and regional stability, with the agency's results highlighting its vital function in countering wartime threats.
As the SBU undergoes significant leadership changes, its recent achievements in the field highlight the agency's crucial role in the ongoing conflict.
