Press Conference with Ukraine's President and NATO's Secretary General

According to Главком: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte held a joint press conference in Kyiv. The meeting focused on Russia's massive strikes, the progress of recent talks in Abu Dhabi, Ukraine's urgent need for air defense systems (AD), and the ongoing support from its allies.

According to reports, Russia launched a major assault using 71 missiles and 450 drones, of which 450 were Shahed-type drones. President Zelenskyy stressed that Russia had deliberately timed this intensified attack, which used a larger number of missiles and drones, for the coldest days of winter.

“Either they have four days in their week, or they are betting on war,” the Ukrainian President remarked.

He also emphasized Ukraine's readiness for dialogue, but not for capitulation, stating that “no one is going to surrender.” This comes as Ukraine faces relentless pressure on its energy infrastructure and civilian areas.

Allied Support and the Critical Need for Funding

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte addressed the Verkhovna Rada, where he discussed new aid for Ukraine from allied nations. He noted that countries including Turkey, Norway, Canada, and Spain are currently reviewing their weapons stockpiles to identify opportunities for transferring military assistance to Ukraine. Among the weapon types under consideration are:

  • A120
  • A9X
  • PAC missiles for Patriot systems

Rutte also underscored the critical importance of funding for Ukraine, stating:

“I am absolutely convinced the money will be there, because we all know how crucial it is.”

He pointed out that currently only two-thirds of allies are participating in the PURL program and stressed the need for a better distribution of financial commitments. Sustained Western support is seen as vital for Ukraine's ability to defend itself.

The press conference confirmed that the Ukrainian side remains prepared for further dialogue with Russia, but only under conditions that do not contradict Ukraine's national interests.

This event highlights the continued importance of international backing for Ukraine amid Russian aggression. The focus on air defense and military aid demonstrates Ukraine's ongoing efforts to strengthen its defensive capabilities. While NATO's engagement and allied support are pivotal for a positive outcome, the necessity for dialogue with Russia remains a key component in the search for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
