Ukraine's Chernobyl Exclusion Zone Redrawn for Border Security
Alterations to the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone Boundaries
According to ХВИЛЯ: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has enacted Decree No. 835/2024, which alters the boundaries of the Chernobyl Radiation and Ecological Biosphere Reserve. The decree authorizes the transfer of a portion of the reserve's land for defense purposes, granting permanent use rights to the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine. This move highlights the ongoing adaptation of Ukraine's security infrastructure in the face of persistent military threats.
The total area of the Chernobyl Biosphere Reserve is 226,269.5 hectares. Specifically, land plots 45 meters wide along the state border line will be allocated for use by border guards to facilitate:
- construction projects
- the installation and maintenance of engineering, technical, and fortification structures
- fencing and border markers
The reserve's administration is tasked with resolving the technical issues required to implement this decision. Furthermore, amendments will be made to the Reserve's Statute and its Territorial Organization Project to ensure compliance with the new requirements.
This decree underscores the priority of state security amid contemporary challenges, particularly in the context of military aggression. - Source unknown
The reallocation of part of the reserve for defense needs may form part of a broader strategy to reinforce the state border. Given the unique environmental sensitivity of the Chernobyl zone, ensuring a balance between ecological protections and security imperatives will be crucial.
