Electric oven consumes energy like dozens of refrigerators: how to save
According to hvylya.net: Ukrainians have been informed about a household appliance that consumes a record amount of electricity and given recommendations for optimizing expenses. This is reported by 'Khvylia'.
A household electric oven can turn out to be one of the most energy-consuming household appliances. Its consumption reaches 2-5 kW·h. With regular use, this can amount to 40-90 kW·h per month, comparable to the consumption of dozens of refrigerators.
'Experts explain this by the fact that a refrigerator only maintains a low temperature, while the oven has to heat up to a high temperature and maintain it, which requires significantly more energy expenditure.' - it is noted in the material.
In a year, such an appliance can consume about 224 kW·h, which is significantly higher than most household devices used daily. It is also noted that modern ovens can consume energy even in standby mode - for example, due to backlighting of the display or built-in clock.
Recommendations for optimizing energy consumption of the oven
What can be done to reduce the oven's consumption
Experts recommend the following steps:
- Plan cooking so that the oven is heated once and several dishes are prepared during that cycle.
- Turn off the oven a little earlier than the end of the program and let it complete the process using residual heat.
- If possible, do not open the oven door during cooking to avoid losing accumulated heat.
- Completely disconnect the appliance from the network after use, especially if it draws power in standby mode.
Other appliances worth paying attention to
In addition to the oven, a number of household devices can significantly impact the electricity bill:
- Washing machines, dishwashers, and dryers belong to the most energy-consuming categories of appliances, as water or air needs to be heated during operation.
- Refrigerators and freezers consume a lot of energy because of their 24/7 operation; although they are lower in power, their constant operation makes expenditures significant.
- Appliances in standby mode ('vampire loads') - televisions, consoles, chargers - continue to consume power even when not in use. This can account for 5-10% of household energy.
General energy-saving recommendations for households
- When purchasing appliances, pay attention to energy efficiency and the presence of labels.
- Turn off or disconnect appliances from the network if they are not in use. Especially if the equipment remains connected in standby mode.
- Plan the use of energy-consuming equipment (oven, washing machine, dryer) during periods of lower network load (if rates or conditions allow) - this can help avoid peak expenses.
- Keep in mind that installing new, more energy-efficient appliances and using them correctly can ensure significant savings in the long run.
A household electric oven can be one of the most energy-consuming household appliances, consuming up to 224 kW·h per year. Recommendations for optimizing energy consumption include taking several steps to save electricity and paying attention to other energy-consuming household appliances in the home.
