Grain Shock: Ukraine Dramatically Cut Exports of Major Crops
Since the beginning of the 2025/2026 marketing year, Ukraine has exported 799 thousand tons of grains and legumes. This is almost half compared to the same period last year.
According to the Ministry of Agrarian Policy, as of July 21 of the new season, Ukraine exported 318 thousand tons of wheat. In comparison, last year during the same period, 994 thousand tons were shipped - more than three times more.
Corn ranks second in export volumes - 420 thousand tons compared to 1.39 million tons last year, which also shows a significant decrease.
Barley exports fell the most dramatically - from 380 thousand tons in the previous season to 56 thousand tons in the current marketing year. This represents a decrease of almost seven times.
At the same time, rye supplies have not been made at all so far, while last year this indicator was also included in the statistics.
In addition to grains, the supply of processed products has also decreased. In the 2025/2026 marketing year, Ukraine supplied only 2.2 thousand tons of flour compared to 3.8 thousand tons for the same period last season.
The significant reduction in grain exports may be related to several factors: the impact of military actions on agricultural production, logistics complications due to port blockades, and the overall decrease in yield due to military actions in agricultural regions.
The marketing year for grains in Ukraine traditionally starts on July 1 and ends on June 30 of the following year. Current figures cover only the first three weeks of the new season, therefore, final conclusions about export dynamics can be drawn later.
Despite challenging conditions, Ukraine continues to be an important player in the global grain market, ensuring food security for many countries around the world.
The presented data indicates a noticeable decrease in grain exports from Ukraine compared to the previous season. This may be caused by military actions, logistical complications, and an overall decrease in yield in agricultural regions. Despite this, Ukraine remains an important player in the global grain market, helping to ensure food security in many countries around the world.
