Residents of Boryspil Outraged by Substandard 'Pothole Repair' on Key Hospital Route
Boryspil Road Repair Sparks Public Outcry
According to Главком: Work to patch the road surface at a major intersection leading to Boryspil's central hospital and adult and children's clinics has been completed, but the shoddy results have provoked anger among local residents. The community points out that this route is used daily by wheelchair users, parents with strollers, the elderly, and veterans with prosthetics or canes, and the repair fails to meet basic accessibility standards. This type of 'quick fix' is a common issue in many Ukrainian cities, where infrastructure often lags behind legal requirements for inclusivity.
Community Highlights Flaws and Official Neglect
Residents have identified several critical failures in the work, including:
- Improperly lowered curbs that hinder access;
- Piles of leftover construction debris;
- Tactile paving for the visually impaired that leads directly into an obstacle.
These problems have caused serious public indignation.
"This isn't a repair. It's a disrespect for people and a complete lack of accessibility, for which Gopanchuk has been responsible in our city for years, while Baichas, Leshchenko, and company ignore the community's needs despite numerous complaints. This freshly done work is an outright insult to all these people,"
stated community representative Kateryna Sych.
It is worth noting that across Ukraine, over 1 million square meters of road damage have been repaired since the start of the year, the highest figure in six years. The government allocated 3 billion hryvnias from its reserve fund for repairs, and the 2026 budget foresees 12.6 billion hryvnias for road maintenance. However, as Svitlana Havrylenko emphasized,
"This year has set a negative record for road repairs in Boryspil. Such vandalism has never been seen before. Not a single section has been done properly."
Residents are also demanding to know who is accountable for approving the substandard work. "Someone must accept the completed work and provide an Acceptance Certificate. Where are these responsible people in our city?" asks an outraged Iryna Fedorova. Artem Karpov, a local resident, added: "You beat me to it. I was literally walking today thinking of photographing and posting this disgrace online."
The anger in Boryspil is captured in sharp comments like "What a disgrace!!!!" from Svitlana Filonenko. Road repair issues in the city remain pressing, and the community hopes for future improvements.
The situation underscores the vital importance of ensuring accessibility for all residents, especially vulnerable groups. The public outrage highlights the need for greater transparency in project execution and quality control. The community's active demands for accountability from local authorities reflect a growing civic awareness of their rights and expectations for public infrastructure.
The ongoing issues with road repairs in Boryspil highlight a broader trend of inadequate infrastructure maintenance across Ukraine. Similar problems have arisen in other regions, such as the recent deterioration of tactile pavement in Kyiv's Obolon District, which raises concerns about the effectiveness of government spending on road repairs. As communities demand better standards, it becomes crucial to examine how these failures impact accessibility for vulnerable populations nationwide.
