A Breakthrough in Cancer Treatment: Harnessing Tumor-Generated Carbon Monoxide

According to НВ — Техно: Scientists at Japan's RIKEN Institute, led by Katsunori Tanaka, have introduced a pioneering local cancer therapy that promises to revolutionize current oncology treatments. Their research discovered that cancer cells produce significantly higher levels of carbon monoxide (CO) compared to healthy tissues. By exploiting this unique characteristic, the team developed a method to generate toxic compounds specifically inside tumors, sparing normal cells from damage. These findings were recently published in the journal Nature Communications.

How the Therapy Works

The approach involves administering a metal-based catalyst that reacts with carbon monoxide emitted by cancer cells. This reaction triggers the formation of phenanthridine, a substance toxic to tumor cells. To prevent the catalyst from being neutralized by glutathione present in cells, the palladium catalyst is encapsulated within an albumin molecule. Laboratory tests were conducted on human cancer cell lines from the liver, cervix, breast, and lungs.

A key advantage of this technology is its precision: toxic compounds are synthesized exclusively within malignant cells, leaving healthy cells unaffected. This selective activation helps avoid the systemic toxicity commonly associated with traditional chemotherapy, which often harms the entire body. Additionally, since carbon monoxide in the bloodstream binds to hemoglobin, the reaction does not occur within blood vessels, enhancing the therapy's safety profile.

Future research will focus on animal model trials to further evaluate the treatment’s safety and effectiveness. This novel strategy opens promising avenues in cancer therapy and could mark a significant step forward in combating oncology diseases.

This advancement is particularly significant given the severe side effects linked to conventional chemotherapy that often reduce patients’ quality of life. By targeting cancer cells more precisely and minimizing harm to healthy tissue, this method could provide a foundation for more effective and patient-friendly treatments. Should ongoing studies validate its efficacy, this approach might dramatically reshape cancer treatment protocols in the near future.

In addition to this groundbreaking therapy, researchers in Oregon have made significant strides in targeting lung cancer and addressing muscle wasting through innovative lipid nanoparticles. This development highlights the growing trend of utilizing advanced technologies to create more effective and precise cancer treatments.
