Ukraine’s Army Lacks the Motivated Personnel It Had in 2022, Says Omega Commander
Valeriy Koretskyy Voices Concerns Over the State of Ukraine’s Armed Forces
According to Главком: Valeriy Koretskyy, a Hero of Ukraine and the commander of the 5th Separate Special Purpose Detachment Omega, has voiced serious concerns about a shortage of personnel in the Ukrainian military-especially among motivated troops. In an interview with Glavkom, he described the current staffing situation as difficult and reminiscent of the challenges faced in 2022.
Despite these issues, Koretskyy acknowledged notable progress in reforms and the digitalization of military management.
“It may go unnoticed by the public, but the military sees the real progress the Ukrainian armed forces have made. Process optimization, digitalization, and so on. I believe we no longer have any chance of returning to a paper-based army,” he stressed.
Government Decisions and Hopes for the Future
Koretskyy also referenced a decision made two years ago by the government and parliament, which allowed individuals sentenced to imprisonment to join Ukraine’s defense efforts. This move was a necessary response to the severe mobilization deficit that military leadership was grappling with at the time.
The Omega commander further expressed his hopes for the post-war period.
“After the war ends, I want us to rest and focus continuously on combat and physical training, as well as self-development. We must not only be a combat-ready army-we must also set an example for future generations of Ukrainians,” Koretskyy stated.
Koretskyy’s remarks highlight the pressing challenges Ukraine’s military faces during wartime, particularly in terms of recruitment and troop motivation. While reforms and digitalization are crucial steps toward long-term effectiveness, the mobilization of resources and the creation of motivated units remain essential for the country’s defense capabilities.
As the situation unfolds, the need for more personnel in the Ukrainian military becomes increasingly urgent. Valeriy Koretskyy emphasizes that without a sufficient number of motivated troops, the effectiveness of ongoing reforms may be compromised.
