Auditors Recover 7.3 Billion UAH for State Budget Following Defense Industry Review
Scrutiny of Defense Industrial Enterprises
According to Главком: Ukraine's State Audit Service is currently examining companies within the defense-industrial complex. The review covers 92 business entities, including those under the 'Ukrainian Defense Industry' structure, formerly known as 'Ukroboronprom'. As of May 2026, auditors have completed inspections of 16 entities, with 27 more currently under review. The remaining audits are scheduled to conclude during the third and fourth quarters of 2026.
Audit Triggers and Outcomes
This audit was launched in the wake of the 'Mindichgate' scandal, which sparked public outrage over inflated food prices for the military-most notably, eggs costing 17 UAH each. Additionally, issues surrounding the procurement of substandard winter clothing for the Armed Forces of Ukraine drew attention, ultimately leading to the resignation of Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov.
During the inspections, auditors conducted over 400 cross-checks. Over a three-month period from March to May 2026, a total of 7.3 billion UAH was returned to the state budget.
Alla Basalaieva, a representative of the State Audit Service, stated: 'Compared to the previous audit of the Ministry of Defense, representatives of defense industry enterprises are not creating any obstacles for our auditors. Everything is proceeding smoothly, and the requested information is being provided.'
This review of defense industry enterprises represents a crucial step toward ensuring transparency and efficiency in the use of budget funds within Ukraine's defense sector. Given prior scandals like 'Mindichgate', the audit may help restore public trust in defense management and improve resource allocation-especially critical during ongoing military operations and the need to sustain the Armed Forces.
In light of the recent audit findings and the ongoing scrutiny of defense procurement practices, it is essential to consider how these developments have influenced military supply costs. Following the public outcry over inflated prices, such as the notorious 17 UAH eggs, the situation has seen a significant turnaround, with current prices for military provisions dropping to 7 UAH.
