Australia scraps plans for its first-ever Trump Tower
Trump Tower project canceled
According to Главком: Construction of Australia's first Trump-branded skyscraper, planned for Queensland, has been called off. The deal between Australian developer Altus Property Group and The Trump Organization-signed in February 2025-fell through less than three months later. The cancellation was driven by the growing toxicity of the Trump brand amid the political climate in the United States and the ongoing conflict involving Iran, along with the developer's failure to meet certain contractual obligations.
Project details
The proposed 91-story tower in Surfers Paradise was estimated to cost nearly 1.5 billion Australian dollars. It was set to become Australia's tallest building and would have featured:
- a six-star hotel
- roughly 270 luxury apartments
- restaurants
- retail shops
- a beach club
- swimming pools
Construction was originally slated to start in August 2026. However, the project never received formal approval from local authorities, as the developer failed to submit a complete building application to the Gold Coast City Council.
Meanwhile, an online petition opposing the development gathered over 120,000 signatures. Altus Property Group CEO David Young stated that
“the Trump brand has become toxic in Australia due to the war surrounding Iran and the political situation in the United States.”
Despite the project's cancellation, the company is exploring potential partnerships with other luxury brands in the future.
The abandonment of the Trump Tower project reflects shifting perceptions of the Trump brand internationally, particularly in Australia, where political and social dynamics are influencing business decisions. It also highlights the critical need for securing all necessary local permits before moving forward with large-scale investments-a lesson that could resonate with other developers in the region.
