Australia launches Solar Sharer: 3 hours of free energy for millions
The Australian government is preparing to implement a large-scale energy-saving program that will allow residents to receive three hours of free electricity from solar panels every day. Energy Minister Chris Bowen shared these plans.
The initiative called Solar Sharer will begin in 2026 in three regions, expanding its reach nationwide. Its aim is to encourage consumers to use electricity during periods of peak solar energy generation, especially during the day.
“People who use electricity during the free period will benefit directly, regardless of whether they have solar panels or rent their homes,” explained Minister Bowen.
One of the conditions for participation in the program is the use of a smart meter. Users will receive energy for free, including those who do not have their own solar panels. This will help reduce energy costs and improve the system for all consumers.
The goals of Minister Bowen and the response from energy companies
The Minister of Energy aims to ensure that by 2030, 82% of electricity in Australia comes from renewable sources. The Solar Sharer program will be part of this strategy. Shares of the largest energy companies in the country - AGL Energy Ltd and Origin Energy Ltd - have already lost 3% of their value due to this initiative.
The significant amount of solar energy in Australia has led to lower prices and excessive demand for electricity. The Solar Sharer program is aimed at optimizing energy consumption and ensuring the sustainable development of the country in the energy sector.
