Fossil Discovery in Australia and New Zealand Caves

According to НВ — Техно: In a cave on New Zealand's North Island, scientists from Australia and New Zealand have unearthed fossils representing 12 bird species and 4 frog species, dating back roughly 1 million years. Published in the journal Alcheringa: An Australasian Journal of Palaeontology, the study reveals that these remains were preserved by layers of volcanic ash from eruptions that occurred 1.55 million and 1 million years ago. This site is now recognized as the oldest known fossil deposit on the North Island.

The Fossils and Their Significance

Among the 12 bird species identified is a new species, Strigops insulaborealis, which is a direct ancestor of the modern kakapo parrot. Unlike its living relative, this ancient bird had weaker legs. The fossil assemblage also includes the remains of an extinct ancestor of the takahē bird, as well as an ancient pigeon related to Australia's bronzewing pigeons. Notably, volcanic eruptions and climate shifts caused the extinction of between one-third and one-half of the species living at that time.
