Belgium's F-16 Pledge to Ukraine Unfulfilled, Citing F-35 Delays as Key Obstacle
Delays in Supplying F-16 Fighter Jets to Ukraine
According to ХВИЛЯ: Belgium has yet to deliver on its two-year-old promise to provide Ukraine with any of the 30 F-16 fighter jets it pledged. The holdup stems from delays in receiving new F-35 jets for the Belgian Air Force, coupled with challenges in training Ukrainian pilots. In 2024, Prime Minister Alexander De Croo promised the first four F-16s would be transferred by year's end, but this did not happen.
The primary reason for the delay is that the Belgian Ministry of Defense has consistently prioritized meeting the operational needs of its own air force. The remaining F-16s in Belgium's arsenal are currently being used to train Ukrainian crews within the country, where two training cycles have been completed. However, a Ukrainian pilot noted that the tactics taught abroad do not fully align with the realities of the war in Ukraine.
“Their tactics are based on the wars they fought, and this war is fundamentally different. Therefore, we must develop our own methods,” the pilot stated.
Timeline for the Expected Transfer of Jets
According to current plans, Belgium will not fully retire its F-16 fleet until the end of 2028. The final transfers of these jets to Ukraine are not expected until 2029. This extended timeline leaves the supply situation for the F-16s uncertain, impacting both Ukrainian pilot training and combat readiness. This delay occurs as Ukraine seeks to modernize its air force to counter a larger adversary.
The protracted delivery of the F-16s could significantly hinder Ukraine's ability to adapt to modern warfare conditions, as pilot training is based on methods not always suited to the specific nature of combat in Ukraine. While Belgium works to fulfill its own operational requirements, it postpones Ukraine's access to crucial air support. With regional tensions remaining high, the speed and efficiency of military aid deliveries are critically important for strengthening Ukraine's defensive capabilities.
