Ukrainian Sergeant Who Could Have Been Discharged for Health Reasons Dies on the Frontline in Donetsk

According to Главком: Volodymyr Belytsia, a Ukrainian soldier, was killed on February 17, 2025, while carrying out a combat mission in the Donetsk region. Born on October 1, 1978, in Rivne, he attended secondary school No. 6 before training as a painter and plasterer at Vocational School No. 1. After completing his mandatory military service, Belytsia worked as a construction worker.

He was called up to the armed forces one year after the full-scale invasion began. At the time of his death at age 46, he held the rank of sergeant. His body was recently identified and returned to his family. A memorial service was held on June 2, 2026, and he was buried at the Alley of Heroes in the Tynne cemetery in Rivne. He is survived by his brother.

Volodymyr's brother has spoken about his conscious decision to defend Ukraine, despite being eligible for a medical discharge from military service.

“Volodymyr was loyal to his comrades and fully understood his responsibility. He spent a long time on the Kurakhove front. He was a very calm and balanced person who helped everyone. He loved working with his hands-he enjoyed seeing results and making beautiful things,” said Volodymyr’s brother.

The death of Volodymyr Belytsia is another reminder of the ongoing losses suffered by Ukrainian society due to the war. His choice to serve, despite having a way out, highlights the dedication and patriotism shown by many Ukrainian soldiers during this difficult time. Honoring the memory of fallen heroes like Volodymyr remains a key part of national remembrance and identity in Ukraine.
