Call for International Support

According to Главком: At the Ukraine Recovery Conference in Gdańsk, Denis Bećirović-Chairman of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina-called on international partners to prevent Russia and its proxies from destabilizing the Western Balkans. He also emphasized his country’s willingness to share postwar reconstruction expertise with Ukraine, particularly in humanitarian demining, infrastructure rebuilding, and war crimes prosecution.

Bećirović’s remarks were rooted in his nation’s own traumatic history. Bosnia and Herzegovina endured war and genocide from 1992 to 1995, making it the only European country to have experienced genocide-against Bosniaks-since World War II.

“Bosnia and Herzegovina was a victim of brutal aggression from 1992 to 1995 and is the only country in Europe where genocide was committed against Bosniaks after World War II. As a nation that has survived aggression and genocide, we fully understand the suffering and hardships faced by the citizens of Ukraine,” Bećirović stated.

Regional Stability Matters

He further stressed the critical importance of stability in the region, declaring:

“Any opening of new crises in the Western Balkans weakens Ukraine, weakens Europe, and threatens the values we are collectively fighting for.”

According to Bećirović, Bosnia and Herzegovina is ready to share its expertise in:

  • humanitarian demining
  • specialist training
  • drone operations
  • digital mapping
  • remote surveillance

Additionally, the country can offer lessons in infrastructure reconstruction, the return of displaced persons, war crimes prosecution, locating missing individuals, and veteran support.

“That is why I call on the free world to provide even stronger support to Ukraine while simultaneously preventing the destabilization of the Western Balkans. Bosnia and Herzegovina will always stand with those fighting for justice, peace, and human dignity,” he emphasized.

The Ukraine Recovery Conference in Gdańsk also drew attention from Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, who suggested that the full-scale war in Ukraine can only end through negotiations. The Ukrainian delegation at the conference is led by Deputy Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko.

Bećirović’s appeal underscores the geopolitical risks facing the Western Balkans and highlights how Bosnia and Herzegovina’s own painful recovery journey could serve as a valuable resource for Ukraine as it seeks to restore peace and stability. In light of current events, such dialogue between nations may prove crucial for strengthening European security and upholding democratic values.

As the situation in Ukraine remains critical, the need for effective dialogue is paramount. A recent analysis from the Financial Times suggests that direct negotiations may be the only viable solution to achieve lasting peace. Understanding the complexities of regional stability is essential, particularly in light of Bosnia's historical experiences with conflict and its calls for international solidarity.
