Kyiv Residents Endure Third Week Without Heat Amid Freezing Temperatures and Flooding
Apartment Block in Kyiv Suffers Prolonged Utility Failures
According to Главком: Residents of an apartment building at 32 Zabolotnoho Street in Kyiv's Holosiivskyi district have now been without heating for three weeks, severely disrupting their lives. The building has also been without running water for three days and without electricity for the last two. Freezing temperatures have caused pipes, including sewage lines, to burst, flooding the lower floors with wastewater. The local housing maintenance office has stated it is unable to fix the situation.
Among the building's residents are young children, elderly people, and individuals with disabilities, making these conditions particularly dangerous for them. Residents attempted to address the issue by purchasing a heater for the technical floor, but it cannot function due to the lack of electricity.
Response from Authorities and Utility Services
A repair crew worked at the building yesterday, and the Holosiivskyi District State Administration reported that teams are focusing on thawing the cold water and sewage systems. These efforts continued through the night and were completed at 5 a.m. by a joint overnight crew from the power utility. Specialists from Ukrzaliznytsia are also on-site.
As of the evening of January 20, Kyiv's water supply, which had been halted due to a Russian attack, was fully restored. However, heating for this specific building remains unavailable. Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal noted that the situation in the energy system remains extremely tense, with emergency power outages continuing in Kyiv. Emergency crews have been working non-stop for several days, leading to cases of frostbite and physical exhaustion among utility workers.
Residents continue to appeal for help, hoping for a swift resolution to the problems with heating, water, and electricity.
The crisis at the building on Zabolotnoho Street underscores the severe hardships faced by civilians due to the ongoing war's impact on critical infrastructure. This incident is part of a wider, systemic challenge affecting many across Ukraine during winter.
While the efforts of utility services and authorities are attempting to meet these challenges, the energy infrastructure remains vulnerable to unpredictable circumstances. Restoring reliable power and heating is critically important for ensuring livable conditions, especially during the winter months.
