Chipotle's Chatbot Now Teaches Python Coding for Free
Pepper Chatbot Gets a Major Upgrade
According to НВ — Техно: In March 2025, it was revealed that Pepper-a chatbot developed by Chipotle and first launched on Facebook Messenger back in 2020-has gained a new skill: writing Python code. Built on IPSoft's Amelia technology, Pepper's evolution has sparked interest among developers and tech experts alike.
Developer Maksym Soltan (known as @Gonzih) created a model that lets users tap into Pepper's capabilities without needing any API keys. This move simplified access to the chatbot's features, though it also raised concerns about the legality of such usage. Meanwhile, Brooklyn-based technologist Rob Desendorf integrated Pepper's API into the OpenCode platform, launching a project called ChipotlAI Max. To give the project a recognizable look, Desendorf used Chipotle's signature branding colors.
Chipotle's Response and Ethical Questions
Chipotle acted quickly, modifying its service to block further unauthorized API access. ChipotlAI Max gained significant traction, earning over 800 stars on GitHub and spawning dozens of code forks. Desendorf also shared guides for exploring the APIs of other companies' chatbots, including:
- Lowe's
- Home Depot
- Sephora
- Expedia
Legal experts argue that a violation of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA) in this case is unlikely, though a breach of the service's terms of use is possible.
“The situation remains complicated,” noted Joseph DeMarco.
He echoes the view of Yafit Lev-Aretz, who also emphasized that the use of technology in such contexts requires careful scrutiny.
Maksym Soltan himself pointed out that 'free computing through fast food' could come with consequences that need to be considered in future development and use of similar technologies. This situation highlights the importance of adhering to ethical standards in tech innovation and having clear rules governing their application.
The events surrounding Pepper and its newfound capabilities have ignited debates about ethics and legality in business technology. Judging by Chipotle's swift reaction, companies are keen to control access to their technologies-a sign of growing caution in the digital innovation space. Projects like ChipotlAI Max may open new doors for AI integration, but they also underscore the need to navigate legal and ethical boundaries carefully.
