Denmark wants to demolish the Little Mermaid statue: why the sculpture caused a scandal
In Denmark, loud debates have arisen about the fate of the sculpture of the mermaid 'Den Store Havfrue' (The Big Mermaid). The Agency of Palaces and Culture demands to remove the 14-ton sculpture due to its non-compliance with cultural heritage, which has sparked a discussion about art and the perception of the female body. The sculpture was installed at the Dragør fort after criticism for 'falseness and vulgarity', but now local residents want to keep it in the city. The artistic community is divided: some consider the statue 'pornographic', while others view the criticism as bodily discrimination. The artist Peter Bech himself believes that the mermaid's breast size is 'proportional' to her scale. Currently, a decision about the future of the sculpture has not yet been made, but the debates continue.
