Demographic Crisis in Ukraine

According to ХВИЛЯ: The demographic situation in Ukraine has become a serious concern in recent years due to the war, population decline, and decreasing birth rates. In recent years, the country’s population has decreased from 42 million to less than 36 million, and according to forecasts, it may fall to 25 million by 2051. These changes are the result of a number of factors, including decreased life expectancy and emigration.

Health Status and Emigration

The average life expectancy for men in Ukraine has decreased from 65.2 years to 57.3 years in 2024, while for women, this figure has dropped from 74.4 to 70.9 years. This decline in life expectancy may be related to the consequences of the war, which has claimed the lives of many individuals. In particular, since 2022, 141 people have died in Hoshcha, highlighting the tragic consequences of the conflict.

Currently, approximately 5.2 million Ukrainians remain abroad after the start of the war. This also impacts the demographic situation in the country. At the same time, in Hoshcha, where 139 infants were born in 2023, this figure rose to 164 in 2024. However, even in this context, challenges are observed related to the closure of educational institutions. For example, a school in the village of Sadove closed due to a lack of students, leaving only nine children.

It is also noted that the maternity ward in Hoshcha lost state funding in 2023, indicating difficulties in the healthcare system that could worsen the birth rate situation. The government’s demographic strategy for 2040 warns of a shortage of 4.5 million workers, which further exacerbates the problem.

As Yevhen Hekkel noted, 'many young men have died. Young men who, frankly speaking, were supposed to replenish Ukraine's gene pool.'

Experts highlight that many young men have died as a result of the war, which will impact Ukraine's gene pool. Anastasia Tabekova also shared her experience: 'After I found out I was pregnant, a few days later my husband was mobilized. He was given leave for childbirth. He left with tears in his eyes.'

All of this indicates that the lack of stability in the country complicates the situation. Anastasia Yushchuk noted: 'There is no stability, there is nothing to build on.' Ultimately, forecasts suggest that Ukraine's population may decline to 9-23 million by 2100, threatening the social and economic stability of the country.

The demographic crisis in Ukraine is a complex issue arising from the war, emigration, and declining health indicators of the population. Forecasts indicate serious consequences for the socio-economic development of the state, requiring urgent measures from the government to improve the demographic situation. Considering the observed trends, Ukraine needs to find effective solutions to support the population and restore stability in the country.
