Lawmakers Turn Against the Government

According to Главком: Vyacheslav Markhayev, a Russian State Duma deputy from the Communist Party, has launched a scathing critique of the Kremlin, urgently calling for a concrete strategy to halt the war in Ukraine. During his address, Markhayev accused Russia's leadership of gross mismanagement and identified several destructive forces fueling the country's crisis: rampant corruption, oligarchic dominance, Ukrainian drone strikes deep inside Russian territory, and devastating frontline casualties.

Markhayev's remarks were reported by the outlet Glavcom, citing The Telegraph. He warned that Russia is teetering on the edge of a massive social explosion and chaos driven by internal failures. The deputy stressed that any future destabilization would be entirely the fault of the current administration. According to him, the West would inevitably exploit domestic turmoil to dismantle what remains of Russian statehood.

Growing Societal Unrest

Compounding the instability, the Russian Public Opinion Research Center has stopped publishing open approval ratings for the president. In April, only 29.5% of respondents included Vladimir Putin on their list of trusted politicians. Meanwhile, in May, communist deputy Renat Suleymanov predicted an unavoidable collapse of the Russian economy. In March, blogger Ilya Remeslo urged Putin to resign, labeling him a "war criminal" and the conflict a dead end.

Since the war began in February 2022, Russia has enforced strict censorship, driving citizens to rely heavily on VPNs to access uncensored news. Key sources of public discontent include:

  • harsh internet restrictions,
  • the slow pace of Russian military advances,
  • and escalating military spending.

Amid these developments, Washington Post columnist David Ignatius observed that U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian dictator Vladimir Putin have become prisoners of their own flawed decisions. The situation in Russia remains tense, with increasingly vocal calls for change emerging from within the political elite.

Vyacheslav Markhayev's speech highlights mounting dissatisfaction in Russian society and political circles regarding the government's conduct of the war in Ukraine. Growing criticism from politicians, especially those in the Communist Party, points to potential fractures in the power structure that could have serious consequences for the country's stability.

In an environment of isolation and censorship, the push for open debate about the nation's problems is becoming ever more critical for society.

Amid rising tensions and public discontent, the Kremlin's concerns are further highlighted by the recent scaling back of Moscow’s Victory Day parade due to fears of Ukrainian drone strikes. This decision reflects a growing sense of vulnerability within the Russian leadership, as showcased in the latest developments around the war. To understand the implications of these security measures and their impact on national morale, read more about the changes to the parade prompted by security concerns.
