The official had promised to remove an individual from a wanted list and secure them employment. His fees for resolving military registration and employment issues reportedly ranged from $4,000 to $10,000. This case highlights ongoing challenges with corruption in local governance, even during wartime.
According to the investigation, the suspect received 77,000 hryvnias in installments to his personal bank card. His actions have been classified under Part 3 of Article 369-2 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which covers the receipt of unlawful benefit for influence, combined with extortion.
Court Measures and Public Reaction
The court ordered the council member to be held in custody, with the option of release on bail set at 506,000 hryvnias. The pre-trial investigation is being conducted by detectives of the capital's police under the supervision of the Kyiv City Prosecutor's Office and with the support of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU).
This incident occurs amidst other recent corruption-related cases. Previously, the State Bureau of Investigations and the Department of Internal Security of the National Police detained:
- A Kyiv resident who attempted to extort $100,000 from the head of a regional military recruitment center;
- A 30-year-old man who, posing as an SBU employee, stole the life savings of a 74-year-old woman.
