The State Statistics Service plans to conduct an assessment of the population

According to glavcom.ua: The State Statistics Service plans to assess the population of Ukraine by the end of the current year. According to the head of the State Statistics Service, Arsen Makarchuk, this assessment cannot replace a census, but in the current situation it is considered the best option.

«We need to conduct this assessment de facto from scratch, when there is no single reliable source that can provide us with data for the assessment,» Makarchuk noted.

Until now, the State Statistics Service used data from the population census of 2001 when calculating the population. However, currently, in the context of the Russian aggression, this approach has become impossible due to the lack of reliable data since 2022.

Using various data sources

Makarchuk also noted that to assess the population, data from state registries, mobile operators, and banks can be used, adhering to confidentiality requirements. This will allow for reasoned assumptions regarding the number of people in the country.

«They know where their clients are, as they can see their transactions in the POS network, and they register clients' visits to branches. There are also, in particular, statistical data on the quantity of consumed food products in a particular area,» explained the head of the State Statistics Service.

The request for population assessment is considered one of the most widespread, as this data interests not only citizens but also government authorities and business. This is an important indicator along with GDP and inflation for calculations in society.

The accounting of the population of Ukraine is an important task for the State Statistics Service. Due to the situation in the East of the country, it is necessary to look for alternative data sources for a reliable assessment. Utilizing various sources, including data from banks and mobile operators, can assist in accurately determining the population count.
