Theatre Director Issues Plea to Halt Photo Shoots in Performance Halls
An Appeal from the Theatre Director
According to Главком: Ivan Pedoruk, Director of the Vinnytsia Regional Ukrainian Academic Music and Drama Theatre named after Mykola Sadovsky, has publicly called on residents to stop organizing photoshoots inside the theatre's premises. Pedoruk stated that these sessions disrupt rehearsals and force changes to the theatre's work schedule. In a Facebook post, he expressed concern over the rising number of requests from parents and teachers seeking to hold graduation album photoshoots at the venue.
Pedoruk noted that 'such requests are becoming more frequent, now occurring on a daily basis.' He emphasized that people sometimes arrive without any prior arrangement, even traveling from regional districts, with the explanation: 'we came because we were told we could take photos here.' He described this situation as 'absurd and unethical.' This highlights a common challenge for cultural institutions balancing public access with their core artistic mission.
The Theatre's Role and Ongoing Reforms
Pedoruk also stressed that the theatre is a center for academic, artistically refined art, and invited all interested parties to attend performances as audience members instead.
The Vinnytsia Regional Ukrainian Academic Music and Drama Theatre named after Mykola Sadovsky has been operating since 1910. Currently, Ukraine is undergoing a reorganization of theatres, circuses, and other cultural institutions, an initiative launched by the Ministry of Culture. All cultural establishments that had state enterprise status must transition into state non-commercial companies. In light of these changes, the theatre director underscores the critical importance of maintaining workflow and proper organizational procedures. This nationwide reform adds pressure on institutions to demonstrate efficient and professional operations.
The director's statement underscores the necessity of preserving the working environment in theatrical institutions, especially within the context of the cultural sector's restructuring. While the growing demand for photoshoots indicates significant public interest in the theatre, it is vital that this interest does not interfere with its primary artistic functions. As management models for cultural institutions evolve, theatres must find a balance between engaging the community and upholding professional standards.
