Kyiv Sewer Rescue: Children Trapped in Underground Maze Call Emergency Line
Emergency Call Leads to Dramatic Sewer Rescue in Kyiv
According to Главком: In Kyiv, a group of children were rescued after they became lost in the city's underground sewer system and called the national emergency number, 112. According to information from the Main Directorate of the National Police of Ukraine, the children were found cold but safe. Kyiv patrol police and State Emergency Service rescuers searched manholes and storm drains, eventually locating the children in a drainage sewer on Khreshchatyk Street. Rescuers extracted them from the underground trap, and preliminary reports indicate they are unharmed. Juvenile prevention officers are currently investigating the circumstances of the incident. The 112 emergency line is Ukraine's single point of contact for all emergency services, similar to 911 in North America.
Other Recent Incidents Involving Children in Ukraine
This case is not the only recent incident involving children in Ukraine. In Dnipro, the body of 14-year-old Anastasiia Sytnikova was found after a two-day search. Separately, police in Bukovyna located 13-year-old Yuliia Voloshchuk after more than 40 hours of searching. The girl had been abducted by a 37-year-old local resident who forcibly held her in empty homes belonging to his relatives. Fortunately, the child is alive and her health is not in danger.
Amid these events, a court sentenced a 39-year-old resident of the Fastiv district who attempted to abduct a young girl from the street. The offender, previously convicted for corrupting a minor, will spend over three years behind bars. In Zakarpattia, an eight-year-old girl tragically died while playing near a location where a family acquaintance was cutting down perennial plants.
Law enforcement officials emphasized that 'the sewer network is a dangerous maze where collapses, toxic gas leaks, or sudden flooding can occur at any moment. There was no time to hesitate – we immediately launched the search.'
The situation highlights the urgent need to raise awareness among parents and the wider community about child safety, particularly regarding hazardous locations like sewer systems. These incidents across Ukraine point to growing risks for minors and the necessity for more vigilant supervision by adults. It is also important to note that law enforcement agencies continue to work on ensuring child safety and investigating such cases to reduce the likelihood of their recurrence.
