The Grand Egyptian Museum Opens in Cairo: What Visitors Will See
On Saturday, November 1, 2025, an exciting opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) took place in Cairo. This impressive complex, located near the famous Giza Pyramids, has become a new home for one of the richest collections of artifacts in the world. The opening of the GEM marked the completion of a twenty-year construction project that had been interrupted by the 'Arab Spring' uprisings, a pandemic, and regional conflicts.
The Prime Minister of Egypt, Mostafa Madbouly, called the museum 'a gift from Egypt to the whole world from a country with a history spanning over 7,000 years.' President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi emphasized that the opening of the museum marks 'a new chapter in the history of the present and future of this ancient nation.'
Among the world leaders present at the grand opening were the President of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the Prime Minister of Hungary Viktor Orban, and the President of Palestine Mahmoud Abbas. Audiences and officials gathered in front of the museum screen, with performances by Egyptian pop stars and an international orchestra, while the sky was illuminated by lasers, fireworks, and lights that formed moving hieroglyphs. The most famous relics of the GEM include treasures from King Tutankhamun's tomb, such as the gold funeral mask, throne, and sarcophagus. The museum, designed by the Irish firm Heneghan Peng Architects, covers an area of about 120 acres and features an elegant design reminiscent of the pyramids. The estimated cost of the museum, over $1 billion, is expected to serve as a tool for reviving tourism and will be beneficial for the return of Egypt's cultural treasures from abroad. This is an important step for preserving and promoting the country's cultural heritage.
