Economist Urges Ukraine to Strike Russia Until September Elections
A Call from an Economist to Ukraine
According to Главком: Economist Vladislav Inozemtsev has called on Ukraine to maintain its strikes against Russia until the parliamentary elections scheduled for September 18–20, 2026. He argues that Ukraine should not limit itself to the 40-day campaign announced by President Volodymyr Zelensky on June 25, 2026. Zelensky had declared a 40-day bombing campaign targeting Russia, which became part of a new wave of drone strikes authorized by the Security Service of Ukraine.
Impact on Russia’s Political Landscape
June 2026 was one of the most intense months for attacks on Russia’s oil infrastructure. Targets included refineries, fuel depots, and terminals, such as the Ilsky refinery in Kuban and the Nizhnekamsk plant in Tatarstan. Digital Transformation and Defense Innovations Minister Mykhailo Fedorov described this strategy as a "logistical lockdown." Ukrainian defense forces are destroying Russia’s refining capacity, logistics networks, storage facilities, and supply routes, which experts believe could significantly undermine Russia’s military capabilities.
Inozemtsev noted that if Ukraine continues its campaign through election day, it could reshape Russia’s political landscape. He urged President Zelensky to address the Russian people directly, saying:
'You have a strange government that attacked our country and started a war. We don’t know whether you support this war or not-it doesn’t even matter. But if there’s something you dislike about your life-shelling, long lines for gasoline-go to the polls and say what you think.' - Vladislav Inozemtsev
The economist also stressed the significance of the election results for Russia’s political future. 'If United Russia actually gets 10%, it will be impossible to just fabricate an extra 50%. Everyone will know it’s a lie. That will send a signal to ordinary Russians, the Kremlin, and regional elites. And it could genuinely pressure the Kremlin to end the war,' Inozemtsev added.
His remarks highlight the strategic importance of sustained Ukrainian military action to influence Russia’s internal dynamics. The elections could serve as a critical turning point for shifting policy in the Kremlin and reveal the true level of public support for the current regime. Amid growing economic and social pressure on Russia, the vote results could act as a catalyst for changing Russian attitudes toward both the war and their government.
As Ukraine intensifies its military efforts, the Kremlin is reportedly preparing for a significant mobilization in response to ongoing setbacks. This situation underscores the urgency of the economic and political implications surrounding the upcoming elections in Russia.
