Russian Gas Exports to Europe Fell by 44%: Lowest Levels in 50 Years

Decline in Gas Exports from Russia
Імпорт газу з Росії в Європу знизився на 44%: найнижчі показники за півстоліття.

Reduction of Gas Exports to Europe

According to ХВИЛЯ: Russian pipeline gas exports to Europe in 2025 decreased by 44%, reaching the lowest level since the mid-1970s. Supply volumes amounted to only 18 billion cubic meters, which is a significant reduction compared to the peak years of 2018-2019, when supplies reached 180 billion cubic meters.

One of the main reasons for this decline is the cessation of gas transit through Ukraine. The agreement between Ukraine and Russia expired on January 1, 2025, which also affected the reduction in export volumes. Additionally, the European Union intends to completely halt imports of Russian fossil fuels by 2027, indicating a shift in energy security strategy in the region.

Historical Context

In historical context, in 1975, Russian gas exports to Europe amounted to 19.3 billion cubic meters, indicating that current figures are the lowest in half a century. Given the aforementioned factors, the situation with gas exports remains critical for Russia and its energy policy in Europe.

The reduction in gas exports reflects not only economic but also political changes in the region, as EU countries strive to reduce dependence on Russian energy resources. This may lead to further reorientation of energy markets and changes in suppliers, particularly in favor of renewable energy sources and alternative suppliers. Such actions could significantly impact the future of energy security in Europe and Russia's strategy in this area.
