EU launches a new border control system on October 12: what to expect for Ukrainians

EU border control. Impact on Ukrainians
Європейський Союз запроваджує нову систему контролю на кордоні: як це вплине на українців?

According to hvylya.net: On October 12, 2025, the European Union will implement a new digital border control system - Entry/Exit System (EES). It will monitor the entries and exits of third country nationals, including Ukrainians traveling to the EU for a short stay.

According to the Financial Times, EES will automatically collect data from passports, fingerprints, and facial images. This will help to monitor whether travelers are violating the allowed length of stay in the European Union.

EU Commissioner for Home Affairs Magnus Brunner emphasized: 'We will know who, when, and where is entering the EU. This is the digital foundation of our new approach to border management.'

Warnings about possible inconveniences on the launch day

The Financial Times warns that there may be inconveniences at airports and border crossings on the launch day due to a large influx of passengers. Member countries had to install new equipment at ports, airports, and train stations to automatically verify travelers' immigration status.

The project has already been postponed several times due to technical difficulties. Ultimately, the EU decided to implement it in stages. Full operation of EES is planned for April 10, 2026.

Checks at specific points and gradual implementation

The system will not apply to holders of residence permits or long-term visas. At the initial stage, checks will be conducted only at specific points. For instance, in the Netherlands, from October 12, they will operate at the ports of Ijmuiden and Eemshaven, while at Schiphol Airport - only from November 3. In Germany, the first biometric checks will start at Düsseldorf Airport, followed later in Frankfurt, Munich, and seaports.

'Implementing this large-scale IT system in 27 member states is a complex and demanding task, but we are ready for it,' Brunner emphasized.

Reminder about new requirements for drivers

It is also reminded that drivers are required to obtain a new document for crossing the border by car.

The European Union is implementing a new border control system that will automatically record entries and exits of third country nationals, including Ukrainians. This will help better control entries and exits and the duration of stay in the European Union.
