The President of the European Council, António Costa, is actively working to support Ukraine's efforts to join the European Union, despite Hungary's opposition ahead of the key EU leaders' summit in Copenhagen. According to Politico, Costa seeks to gain support from EU member states to open negotiations regarding Ukraine and Moldova's future membership.
Currently, the President of the European Council is focusing efforts on countering Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who is using the veto power to block Ukraine's accession to the EU. Costa expressed the idea of opening negotiation clusters with the consent of the majority of EU countries so that Ukraine and Moldova can begin the necessary reforms to align with European standards. This will allow for the advancement of both countries' applications, even if some countries oppose.
EU Enlargement Commissioner Olivér Várhelyi will visit Ukraine to complete the legal review stage necessary for further progress in the candidacy process. At the same time, an official representative of Hungary dismisses the possibility of Ukraine joining the European Union, citing the stance of Hungarian citizens.
According to gazeta.ua: The President of the European Council supports Ukraine's path to EU membership, countering opposition from Hungary. Ukraine and Moldova are starting reforms to align with European standards, despite the veto from some EU countries.
