EU to adopt 20th sanctions package against Russia by the anniversary of the invasion
EU Sanctions Package Against Russia
According to Главком: The European Union plans to adopt the 20th sanctions package against Russia by the fourth anniversary of its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. This move aims to strengthen accountability for Moscow's aggressive war against Ukraine. The imposed sanctions include travel restrictions and the freezing of assets in EU countries.
Additional Measures and Their Consequences
Additional measures will include new sanctions in the energy and banking sectors. In particular, the possibility of banning the import of Russian uranium is being considered, which could significantly impact Russia's energy security. These decisions are a response to Kremlin actions and are aimed at supporting Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict.
It is worth noting that the Russian Federation has postponed plans to triple its annual liquefied gas production. Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak admitted that this is a result of the impact of Western sanctions. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also emphasized the importance of sanctions, stating that:
“A peace agreement to end the war does not imply the automatic lifting of sanctions against Russia; however, the US may move towards their gradual easing after the conflict.” - Volodymyr Zelensky
The adoption of the new sanctions package underscores the duration and seriousness of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, as well as the efforts of the international community to support Ukrainian sovereignty. Restrictions in the energy sector, particularly a ban on importing Russian uranium, could significantly impact Russia's economy and its capabilities in the energy sphere.
These sanctions also signal the EU's intent to continue exerting economic pressure on Moscow until a stable peace is achieved in the region.
