Estonian Security Services Uncover Campaign to Destabilize the Country by Promoting a 'People's Republic of Narva'
Disinformation Campaign Targets Estonian City
According to Главком: Estonian security services have identified a coordinated social media campaign promoting the creation of a 'People's Republic of Narva.' This campaign includes calls for arming citizens, distributing leaflets, and acts of sabotage. The Estonian Internal Security Service has classified this as a disinformation operation aimed at destabilizing the country.
Narva is a border city in eastern Estonia with a population of approximately 50,000. Roughly 90% of its residents are Russian speakers. Over recent weeks, the campaign has spread maps and flags of the proposed 'republic,' using slogans such as:
- 'Russians, we are not alone!'
- 'From Narva to Püssi, this is Russian land.'
Sources within the security services, cited by the German newspaper Bild, link the campaign's launch to a moment when global attention was focused on Iran. Estonian authorities do not rule out that this could be part of preparations for a potential Russian invasion, following a playbook similar to the 2014 events in Ukraine.
“Such methods have been used before in Estonia and elsewhere. It is a simple and inexpensive way to intimidate and destabilize a society. This is a provocation, and participating in it can have criminal consequences,” noted expert Marta Tuule.
Estonian intelligence is therefore monitoring the situation closely and taking steps to prevent any potential negative consequences arising from this information campaign. This incident highlights the ongoing vulnerability of Baltic states to hybrid warfare tactics. The situation underscores the critical importance of information security in the modern world, where disinformation can be used as a tool to destabilize societies. Estonia, with its significant Russian-speaking minority, remains a potential target for such campaigns, raising concerns about regional security and external interference in the nation's internal affairs.
