European Gymnastics Lifts Sanctions on Russian and Belarusian Athletes, Allowing Return to Competition
Russian and Belarusian Gymnasts Cleared to Compete Again
According to Главком: European Gymnastics has decided to remove sanctions against athletes from Russia and Belarus, enabling them to compete under their national flags and anthems at the 2026 European Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Croatia, scheduled from August 13 to 23. This marks a major step toward reintegrating these competitors into international events after a period of restrictions.
Russian coach Valentina Rodionenko commented on the development, noting that it resolves issues for Olympic champion Viktoria Listunova, who had twice been denied neutral status previously.
“We expected this decision from European Gymnastics, but it’s unclear why they delayed it. The international federation had already dissolved the neutral status commission earlier. It was crucial for us to understand how to proceed with Viktoria Listunova, who aims to compete at the European Championships and had been refused neutral status. Now, it seems they’ve come around,” Rodionenko stated.
Global Sports Implications
Viktoria Listunova, a 21-year-old Olympic and European champion, participated in a pro-war rally in 2022 displaying the letter Z and shared an Instagram post raising funds for Russian gymnast Kravchenko, whose father was killed by Ukrainian defenders. European Gymnastics’ decision opens new avenues for Listunova and other athletes from Russia and Belarus, allowing them to once again represent their nations on the international stage.
The reinstatement of Russian and Belarusian athletes at events like the European Championships could significantly impact global sports policy, sparking mixed reactions from countries that have backed sanctions against these nations due to political tensions. This move represents a pivotal moment in restoring sporting ties that were disrupted by geopolitical factors, potentially reshaping future dynamics within the athletic community.
The recent decision by European Gymnastics to lift sanctions on athletes from Russia and Belarus has significant implications for competitors like Viktoria Listunova, who has faced challenges regarding her status. As the situation unfolds, many are closely monitoring the awaited ruling from CAS on her neutral status, which could further impact her ability to compete internationally and the broader dynamics of sports diplomacy.
