Robert Fico’s Visit to Moscow

According to Главком: Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has traveled to Moscow, where he laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier near the Kremlin. During the visit, he spoke with Russian journalists and reiterated his stance on Russia, describing himself as the European Union’s 'black sheep.'

'The European Union always has some black sheep. I belong to that flock. I say this everywhere, so I have no problem saying it here-I oppose a single mandatory opinion.' Robert Fico

Fico emphasized the importance of dialogue between Slovakia and Russia. 'The key word is dialogue-we need to talk and meet,' he added, underscoring his support for normal relations between the two countries.

The prime minister confirmed his intention to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss practical matters. He also expressed support for any form of ceasefire in Ukraine, stating: 'I want to express my belief that we are approaching the end of the Russian-Ukrainian war.'

Active Stance and Future Plans

Additionally, during his remarks, Fico referenced the assassination attempt against him in 2024. Despite his active position on Russia, he announced he would not participate in the May 9 parade in Moscow. In Slovakia, officials also noted that Fico may deliver a message to Putin from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who has previously expressed Kyiv’s readiness for diplomatic dialogue.

Robert Fico’s visit to Moscow highlights his push to restore contacts between Slovakia and Russia, despite the strained relations amid the war in Ukraine. His statements on the importance of dialogue and support for a ceasefire in Ukraine may signal a shift in Slovakia’s foreign policy priorities, especially as regional tensions rise. Whether constructive talks between the sides will materialize remains to be seen in the near future.

As Fico seeks to enhance dialogue with Russia, observers note that his actions could have broader implications for regional stability. In light of this, Poland may be willing to overlook Fico's Moscow visit if it leads to efforts in facilitating support for Ukraine. This potential shift in alliances underscores the delicate balance of foreign relations in Eastern Europe.
