Veronika Zhilina’s Move to Azerbaijan

According to Главком: The International Skating Union (ISU) has authorized 18-year-old figure skater Veronika Zhilina to represent Azerbaijan. A silver medalist at the Russian Junior Championships, she has obtained a key document known as a Clearance Certificate. This certificate is issued when an athlete meets residency or citizenship requirements in their new country. Back in May, the Figure Skating Federation of Russia (FFKR) had already released her to compete for Azerbaijan.

Zhilina trains at Evgeni Plushenko’s academy. Notably, she missed two seasons due to health issues but still managed to win the Russian Junior Grand Prix Final, highlighting her strong potential.

Skeleton Team Training Camp Canceled

In other news, a planned July training camp for Russia’s national skeleton team in annexed Alushta, Crimea, has been called off. Senior coach Denis Alimov explained the situation:

“The decision to cancel the July camp in Crimea was made quite some time ago. Athletes will continue preparing for the season in their home regions under their personal coaches. I don’t think the cancellation will cause any major issues.” - Denis Alimov.

These developments highlight shifts in the sports landscape, particularly in figure skating, where athletes are seeking fresh opportunities to advance their careers. For Zhilina, switching to Azerbaijan could be a pivotal step given her youth and junior-level achievements. Meanwhile, the skeleton camp’s cancellation underscores the challenges athletes face amid changing political circumstances and restrictions that can disrupt competition preparations.

As athletes navigate their career paths, the recent developments in figure skating echo similar stories in other sports. For instance, the lineup for Wimbledon 2026 has revealed exciting matchups for seven Ukrainian women, showcasing how athletes continue to pursue their ambitions despite challenges. This parallel highlights the resilience and adaptability required in today's competitive sports environment.
