A critical factor was that the officer's profile on the Strava app was set to public, allowing third parties to access information about the precise location of the carrier and its escort vessels.

At the time, the ship was in the Mediterranean Sea, northwest of Cyprus and roughly one hundred kilometers from the Turkish coast. As noted by the French publication Le Monde,
